THE JUNKYARD GARDEN Christy Frazier, owner of The Pearl nightclub, has offered us the use of a third of an acre plot near her club at the corner of First and Main--a prime location in Springfield. We recently repaired the crumbled front retaining wall of the site, with the help of some individual donors. We will soon need to repair the upper section of the wall, and we're still seeking donations of funds, materials, and skilled labor-time to help. With the help of the Emerging Green Builders, a branch of the US Green Building Council, we will soon be breaking ground on a sustainable building demonstration: our garden's toolshed. We are extremely excited about partnering with this capable group of young architects, engineers and designers on what will be a priceless addition to the garden. If you are interested in a plot, please get in touch, or better yet, come meet us on Saturday afternoons. The garden is for everyone and we can't wait to see what the community grows. Join us this Saturday, February 2nd at noon, for a workday. More photos, and more information coming soon. Check out Joey's blog posting about the garden, including a photograph of our new mural. |
